MONoPOLE and FREITAG
This dates back to its first bag, the F13 Top Cat, which was specifically designed for bike couriers. Over the years, FREITAG has engaged with the cycling community through events like bike messenger world championships and bike polo tournaments. With various rental offers ranging from fixies to cargobikes, cycling has also established its place at FREITAG stores.
In collaboration with Brompton, a bag specifically designed for the British folding bike was created in 2021. This close relationship with cycling led to the desire to develop a perfect urban bicycle.
Vision
At FREITAG, the idea emerged to create an urban bicycle that is both compact and functional – a bike that eases everyday logistics without sacrificing agility. The vision was clear: a compact, agile, and durable city bike that supports the urban FREITAG lifestyle.
Development and Challenges
In 2018, Nicola Stäubli, co-founder at MONoPOLE and former employee at FREITAG, introduced a self-developed bicycle prototype. This prototype was improved at the FREITAG innovation incubator and reached a near serial production development status in 2021.
Founding of Toolbike AG
To pursue the project outside of the existing company structure, Nicola Stäubli and Daniel Freitag founded Toolbike AG at the end of 2021, following the principles of Steward Ownership. This is where the MONoPOLE No O1, a compact cargobike with invisibly integrated electric assistance and a modular front-rack solution, was created.

Another Bicycle Project
Markus Freitag, the other FREITAG brother, decided to advance the development of an urban bicycle based on the classic diamond frame. Together with a team of designers, frame builders, and engineers, he developed FLINC - a mini cargobike with 20-inch wheels and a clever front-rack solution that meets urban requirements.
Joint Mission
MONoPOLE and FLINC pursue the same goal: innovation, functionality, and the optimization of urban mobility.
Both projects are ideologically close and see themselves as accomplices in the mission to contribute to the mobility transition and improve the everyday logistics of urban cyclists. More in the following newspaper article from Tagesanzeiger.
